Kickball Katy from Vivian Girls

Here's a couple of Katy "Kickball Katy" Goodman from when Vivian Girls played at Carleton College last weekend. You can check out a few more photos from that night on The Cave's website!

This weekend is Mid-West Regionals for Ultimate. CUT drove down next to Madison and everyone's asleep upstairs right now. I couldn't fall alseep myself, too much stuff on my mind right now. One of which, I went to the doctor yesterday and they think I've torn my PCL. It's a ligament I've never heard of before, but its still pretty upsetting news. I have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday. Not really sure what this will mean for the immediate future, but I guess I just have to make the best of it for now. But then again, that's what living a happy life is right? Always just making the best of things. In fact I recall posting something similar along these lines over a year ago around winter break.

Posting this with a smile,
Hai

Vivian Girls Portrait

Hmm... idk what I was thinking in that last post... here's one with more traditional lighting. Again, Vivian Girls. They're a big enough band that I don't need to introduce them.

Vivian Girls

Vivian Girls is internationally known band made up of Cassie Ramone (guitar/vocals), Katy "Kickball Katy" Goodman (bass/drums/vocals), and Frankie Rose (drums/bass/vocals). I shot this with almost the exact same lighting set-up as the Suuns. The light on camera right didn't do off on this one but at a different time of day and with different settings. An overall very different image.

Suuns

I'm not gonna pretend like I'm really hip into the music scene. But the Suuns sounded pretty cool live playing a collection of songs with surprising diversity in The Cave last weekend.

This is also my firsts band portrait. One white umbrella SB-600 camera left, one silver umbrella SB-600 camera right, and an ancient Vivitar flash connected to a slave adapter on a tripod behind the band. Shot it with the Nikon D3 with a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. My typography and graphics design could use some work... Lets just call this version 1 for now.

The Clarks and Mrs. Rambo

I successfully went on a jog today! First time in a while since my knee injury. I definitely don't feel like I'm in the greatest shape right now since I haven't been able to practice with the CUT, but I've also been able to do a lot of other things with my extra time (from not being exhausted after practice, etc.)

04.25.11

Checked out Athletics' camera equipment again to take some band pictures in The Cave. Vivian Girls and The Suuns were playing. I did alright with one band, but no so well with the other.. You'll have to wait till I get  them up to judge for yourself. It might be a couple weeks though cause of Midterms papers.

Happy Easter!

Here's two versions of the same picture, completely unrelated to Easter. I'm not sure which I like more. I increased clarity in the top one and added a blur the the bottom one. What's your opinion? (Click to enlarge)

Reactions to 8fps

On the first day that I got to use Athletics Nikon D3 which has the capacity to shoot 8 frames per second, I walked around with a 50mm f1.8 showing everyone the sound of angels singing --  14 frames shot in a row at 8fps.

From the Desktop

These pictures have been sitting on my laptop's desktop for a while waiting to be posted. I feel like I've posted similar versions of some of these pictures before, but the first picture is new at least. The second picture was taken by Michas Vanni in medium format film.

Edit: Hmm... I stand corrected. Apparently all of these have been posted already. My apologies. I'll post a bunch of pictures tomorrow to make it up.

AB+

Signed up to give blood today. I'm AB+. In other news, Marianna ('13) just finished knitting a hooded scarf that I designed. It doesn't look nearly as feminine or absurd as I imagined (which is great!) The sad part is that I won't really have the chance to wear it until next winter :(

I'll put up pictures eventually, but not for a while.

Here are some pictures from my Hike not so long ago. On another note, Punch Pizza is giving away free pizzas today!

Slam Poets

Anis Mojgani and Derrick C. Brown, two living poets, come to Carleton. Mojgani (second picture) won back-to-back titles in the National Individual Poetry Slam in 2005 and 2006. Brown (third picture) won the California Independent Book Critics' Award in 2004 for his written work, and his performance poetry has won six first-place slam finishes. (According to Wikipedia.)

04.18.11

The first shot is digital, the others are B&W film (Ilford HP5+). The put the color in during the post. The second picture was taken at dusk. You'll have to enlarge pic #3 (by clicking it) to better appreciate it.

Light It

Here's a couple more shots from the Bouldering Portraits. The last picture shows how I lit my set (click to enlarge). I moved that small light on camera-right around a little. For example, its a little further back and more right in the first picture (plus, I don't think the silver umbrella light went off in this shot), and on camera-left in the second picture. I wish I had more lights to work with, but I suppose I can focus on mastering 2-light set-ups first.
