The Last Paris Photos

And its all film (surprise?...), all Fujichrome 50. This film is known for its vibrant colors and high contrast look. This first shot is Kristian Kasi double exposed with a shot from Carleton College campus (shot by Davey Bendicksen, which he forgot about and sent that roll of film to Paris for me to shoot). The second shot is a 15 or 30 minute (I forgot..) exposure from Kasi's roof. Note the saturation in the last shot was not increased! In fact, I decreased it just slightly. The shot is taken in front of Hotel de Ville.

My Spring Break

Well, this was most of it anyways: Ocean, ultimate, relaxing, and Smokey Mountains. All with The CUT.

Bought my first couple rolls of Ektar 100, color calibrated my monitor today, and spent the last two days processing pictures I've shot in the past month.

The Last One's a Phallus

Here's a few more oddly shaped ones that I found. For some reason, the first one reminds me of a dragon-like creature. I like the confusion in the middle one, and the last one is fittingly symbolic. Expect many, many more pictures of the arboretum this term.

Back From Spring Break

So my latest freelance assignment is to get shots of the arboretum year round. He's the first couple shots that I got yesterday with my 300mm zoom.

Wilmington, North Carolina 2011. Back to school today.

Someone told me this is the moon at it's biggest in the past 20 years. It doesn't look all that big in this picture, so you'll have to take my word for it :)

Tyler Mahony

I've been shooting with my manual focus 50mm more now. Mostly because now that I've worked with some old Minoltas, I don't mind taking the time to manually focus my shots anymore. My lens only stops down to F1.8 unfortunately.

Nikky Montesclaros

This is from when Nikky, Kristian, and I went to Versailles, France on a day the weather man said there would be a lot of snow. I thought it would be like a winter wonderland. Turns out, it was just cold...

Last Night by the Ocean

Lost to Florida today and tonight's the final night by the ocean. Here's two sunset pictures. Well... the same one but the second one is HRD'd.

Saturday, March 19, 2011

The Sun doesn't set over the ocean here, but it still catches some nice hues in the sky.

Today's day one of Easterns. We won our showcase game vs. Colorado 9 or 10 to 15 last night, but neither team performed near their potential. By my count, we're starting this tournament with 5 injuries.

Ocean Sunrise

Woke up at 6:49am this morning a minute before my alarm went off. Google said sunrise was at 7:18 and so I spent the next half-hour or so at the ocean. Finished my roll of HP5+ and stated a roll of Portra VC. This shot was right as I was leaving back for the house. Depending on the angle at which I'm looking at my laptop, the blacks and contrast changes dramatically. That said, I don't really know which shots were my "good" shots by looking at my laptop.

The Bald Spot's in Paris?!

So as I scanned in my fujichrome, I found a series of double exposures that I swear I did not take... I talked to Davey Bendiksen and we realized he might have started the roll, wound it up, forgot, then sent me the roll. So everything you see above is in camera -- on the film. Both are a night shot of a farris wheel in front of Hotel de Ville. The top one also has a picture of the Bald Spot!

Spring Break 2011 has begun :) After a 24 hour drive, 2x foot long subs, and a bag of Cheetos we're (CUT) is in North Carolina half a block away from the ocean. Its AMAZING! On the ride here I was reminded of a childhood desert my aunt use to make. It's nothing breathtaking, but a nostalgic treat nonetheless. You peel a banana and put in a bag or plastic wrap. Take a pin-roller (I justed used a peanut butter jar) and roll out the banana until its about one centimeter thin (or a little less). Spread some peanut butter on top (I bought dark chocolate peanut butter) and then wrap it all up in the plastic wrap and freeze it overnight. A wonderful ocean-side snack :)

Picture above is film. Kodak Portra VC 160iso from Versailles, France 2010.

More Ferris Wheels

I also bracketed the shot because it looked so great on the back of my Nikon D3000 LDC screen that I for sure wanted to capture it on film (Kodachrome 64 at that!!). The clouds covered up more sun, I adjusted the settings a little by the light meter. I was bored with the super dramatic look, so I adjusted the color balance in the post this is what I got. Here's the original digital shot and the other film shot. Paris, France 2010.

Last final today. Fingers crossed.

Paris Films. Check.

This might look familiar. The digital version was posted almost 3 months ago. Here's the shot on Kodachrome a few moments later. The clouds covered up a lot of the sunlight that was in the digital shot.

Did some reading on my films today. At the moment, I've got my mind set on Velvia and Ektar 100. And in the spirit of it all, I took out my wide angle lens from my camera bag today for a Minolta with a roll of HP5+ (B&W) and Kodak Portra (color negative). And finally, I finished scanning ALL the film I brought back from Paris today, EXCEPT one more roll of HP5+ waiting to be developed. I have no idea what sorts of shots are on it...

Kodachrome 64. Paris, France 2010. A pretty typical Paris tourist shot. Click the photo to see it bigger.

I've been reading up on my films and dreaming about medium and large format cameras. One of my goals for next term will to be familiarize myself with using and taking large format shots (probably B&W shots to cut costs and self-develop).

7-15-11 to 9-04-11

Bought my ticket to Vietnam this morning. Still waiting for my dad's ticket to clear process/confirm or whatever (He insists on coming with to watch for my well being, but I think everyone knows he just wants an excuse to come to Vietnam). I'll be gone from July 15th until September 4th.

My left knee is a little messed up from practice yesterday. Just sort of a silly collision. Limping around now though cause it feels uncomfortable to bend or put pressure on the knee. But besides that, I feel wonderful right now. Not exactly sure why. Maybe its cause of the Larson and the ticket to Vietnam, or maybe its the Kodachrome scans I just got around to finishing (the picture above is Kodachrome!! Paris, France 2010.)

Phil Bowen

I miss spending hours on photoshop. So that's what I did after I finished writing my Final essay for Modern Philosophy. This only took a few minutes, but I think its a look I might start playing with more, just to see where it could go.

Dear Film

So I opened my house's fridge yesterday to see my lone roll of HP5+ waiting to be developed since Paris (The shot is just a digital shot converted to B&W). I haven't shot any film since I've been back to the states. I guess I've hardly shot anything (digital or film) comparatively. But all of this will change this summer! I'm set on shooting film in Vietnam for The Larson project. Maybe a medium or large format camera will fall into my lap between now and then and I'll come back with A0 size prints by Winter 2012. If there's any film fanatics out there with advice for me, I'm all ears :)

Summer in Vietnam

I just got word that I received the Larson fellowship for this summer!! This means I'll get to spend at least a month in Vietnam this summer taking pictures and discovering my roots and myself :)

This picture was taken by Michas Vanni in Paris, 2010. Medium format (film) with Kodak Portra NC 120mm 400iso.

Kayla Nygaard

Kayla Nygaard '12.

CUT goes 4-0 the first day at Standford Invite, but we're left with a bitter taste of mediocre play.

Saturday, March 5, 2011

Woke up 6:30am here in Cali. Not cause I had to but just how the time-zone difference worked out. Here's two more pictures from Book Across the Bay. Can you guess what happened in the second picture?

Off to Stanford

Leaving campus around 3:25pm to go play at in the Stanford Invite this weekend. Coming back around 7:00am Monday to a final in Macroeconomics.

Picture above is the HUGE fire they had on the ice of Lake Superior during Book Across the Bay.

OCS Photo Contest

Walked into Sayles Hill this morning and saw a poster about the Off Campus Studies (OCS) Photo Contest. Cash Prizes. Nice. Each person is allowed two submissions. There are 5 categories:
1. Picturesque Places
2. Story
3. Libraries of the World
4. People
5. People's Choice

Now the question is which 2 pictures do I submit?
