Lemonade Cookies

So for whatever reasons, we decided to make sugar cookies with pink lemonade mix a couple nights ago.  Unfortunately it wasn't a great success.  The cookies definitely taste like lemonade ... but not necessarily in a good way :)  In short, we followed a typical sugar cookie recipe but replaced all of the granulated sugar with pink lemonade mix.  We didn't realize how strong that would be.

One is Silver and the Other is Gold

One question that I asked myself last term is whether one (or I) become friends with another out of convince or out of the pursuit of friendship-qualities.  It's safe to conclude that it is combination of both, but which comes first?  I pose this question because I find myself hanging out with someone new every term, and then in the following term, I don't spend even close to as much time with the individual.  But that being said, the long established friendships don't have an upkeep cost.  They're just always there when you decide to come back.

Moto-I

Post processed all 300 picks I took at Vicky's 21st birthday party in one day.  Well, I suppose it's 12:08AM, but we'll still call it the same day.  Good thing I feel pretty confident with Photoshop or that whole experience could have been a lot worse.  Needless to say, club photography is definitely one area I need to work on.

Club Photography

It was sort of a disaster...  kind of.  So at first things seems to work out since I could take my time with the shots.  Then once it got more crowded, much of the ambient light was blocked and so my D3000 couldn't auto focus and so all the shots kept coming out blurry.  Eventually I just switched from my 50mm 1.4 for my 16-85mm 3.5.  It took me a little bit, but I realized I can just shoot at f-3.5 then 5.6, then 9 as long as I just abuse the flash.  And so I guess renting the 50mm was a waste of $20.  It was fun to play with though.  Anyways, now I have 100s of photos to post process and many photos to sharpen ... heh...

So basically I learned two things.  (1) You don't need a fast lens for club photography (unless I just completely missed something...) and (2) Club photography seems like really amateur and skill-less point-and-shoot photography.  Just use a lot of fill flash, bounce the light if you can, and frame the picture in your viewfinder.  It felt like I had a big point-and-shoot camera that could power a bigger flash.

House-Sitting

So I'm house sitting for a friend for the next two weeks.  This means I'll have to commute back and forth everyday for the next two weeks between home and Northfield.  Hopefully has money for a BMW SUV doesn't eat up all my profits ... heh.

Also, one of my 100+ cousins asked me to take pics at her 21st B-Day tonight.  So HAPPY BDAY VICKY!  She also had me design the flier below for her.  I suspect it's a much more pretentious flier than the event.  But we'll see I guess.  She's also paying the cost of equipment rental, so I'll be using a f2.8 18mm prime and a SB 800 Speedlight for the first time :)

Stadiums

Woke up at 6:35 today to run stadiums with Mike and Kristine.  Felt like I wanted to vomit at the end ... it's been a while.  Starting to lift a lot again though (twice yesterday: once with Mike in the morning and once with Luke after bouldering.) Oh and I am also getting back into climbing :)  My forearms aren't as far behind as I would have expected them to be considering I haven't climbed since the beginning of winter.

Work is just increasingly hard.  The more I accomplish the higher expectations he has the next time around.  So now I'm suppose to write a software program that will count and identify returning customers (etc.) based on their credit card numbers.  Now if this was given to me during Intro to CS, it wouldn't have been too bad, but I'm a philosophy major and CS was two terms ago ...

A Dacie Moses Experiance

After diner we headed over to Dacie Moses for their desert day.  Unfortunately we came too late, and they ran out.  No worries though, it's Dacie Moses, you can make your own desert.  We wanted to make something crazy though, not just chocolate chip cookies (not to mention that Mike doesn't like chocolate.)  Anyways, we found a recipe for Candied Orange, Almond, and Honey cookies.  We ended up substituting just about everything :)

One of my jobs was to put in four cups of sifted flour.  Later, when we tasted the batter, we noted it was very sweet and still very runny.  Mike tastes the flour and says, "This is powered sugar..."  We end up doubling everything and Kristine puts in four heaping handfuls of flour.  As we check on the cookies which we had just placed in the oven, one of the Dacie girls walks by and comments, "Wow, those look pretty good for cookies without flour."  ...???...  Turns out we had used beer muffin batter.  The cookies still tasted like cookies.  Mostly because it was just soo sweet.  The final product was essentially pazuki without the ice cream.

Work ... :)

Wow.  This summer internship at Northfield Enterprise Center is amazing!  The only thin I can really complain about is the low pay.  Everything else has been great!  Lots of freedom, lots of room for creativity, and very relaxed.  Currently my two projects are giving The Mandarin Garden Restaurant an online presence (there's a lot of nuances to this, but its not really worth talking about), and figuring out Butler's retuning customer rate via credit card numbers and how to use these customers to bring in more business.

On another note, Northfield pick-up hasn't been as high-level as I thought it would have been from what people said.  It's still fun though, just not what I expected.  [Pics above are from reunion.]

Reunion: The Final Day

I saw Lynn Deichert (the trumpeter above) at the Parade of Classes yesterday!  (He's one of my friend's dad).  My parents also came up for Father's Day and then I just found out that my job starts at 9am Monday morning.  Business casual, bring your laptop.  That's all I know.

Reunion: Lyman Lakes

Here's Lyman Lakes after the storm on Thursday.  30 second exposures with the highest f-stop I have on my wide-angle.  As for reunion, today is my last day and I'm hoping to reach and rack up a bunch of overtime hours.  It'll be close, but I'm not quite there.

Reunion: Stories of '85

I shot the Class of '85 Group Interview yesterday.  It was just a series of amazing stories.  My favorite was that Dominoes Pizza opened their freshman year.  They guaranteed your pizza within 30mins or its free.  So '85  would round up everyone and order all at the same time.  It was a lot of pizza, some of which must be paid for, but it was also a lot of free pizza :)

Reunion: Alumni Annual Fund Breakfast

I got better shots than I had thought from here.  I've been learning a lot from just facing a lot of challenging lighting problems with my cheap equipment and trying to figure out how to deal with it.  Anyways, last night, my cousin invited me to shoot her 21st bday party at some club, a friends wedding, and a modeling shoot.  Although I should be excited for those opportunities, idk if I want to give up 3 weekends for that...

Reunion: Thursday

There was a crazy storm in Northfield earlier tonight.  Yellow clouds against a clear blue sky all within the size of campus.  Anyways, here are some of my shots from the day.

And I'm Back at Carleton

Working reunion weekend the next four days.  After our meeting it really sounds like a sweet job.  There's no limit on the number of hours I can work ... $$$!!  The images above is just some graphics designing for [possibly] CUT's alumni weekend '11.

Gilman Self Portrait

The Gilman Foundation gave me a little bit of money for my study abroad at Parsons Paris (Yay!)  I also had to pay $50 for an International Student Identification Card (needed overnight shipping to meet the documentation deadlines) ... then I read Carleton's French Studies handbook that Susie gave be a couple days ago and realized I could have just paid the OCS office $22... Oh well.

Anyways, they wanted a high resolution head shot too.  Side table lamp light against a back lit window.  800 ISO (because my lenses are soo slow...) on a wide-angle lens.  It was just a quick mom-can-you-take-a-picture-of-me thing.  Now looking at the picture, I should have clearly moved the desk lamp forward.

Back in MN

Drove 8 hours last night on our way back.  had two Monster Coffee energy drinks.  Felt like I wanted to throw up at some points during the drive after the second one.  Probably just too much sugar ... or chemicals ...
Mom couldn't really handle driving.  She didn't want to leave my brother but she also final recognized how impractical that is.  Anyways, she mentioned how people in Ohio just didn't seem quite as nice and inviting as Minnesotans.  She also commented countless times how everything seems soo much more expensive there..

On an aside, I apologize for the recently more common occasional-lame-picture(s)...  I'll work on it...  Just got the full Adobe suite updated :)

Goodbye Ohio

Well.. the plan was to leave shortly after the repairman comes...  But I think my mom just doesn't want to go, so she's made excuses to stay until late afternoon...  At least we'll be leaving today.  Things could be better with my brother, but things could also be worse.

I'm posting this picture on my brother's computer, whose a big computer guy, and I noticed the color and contrast is noticibly different.  I'm going to guess that it's my $400 laptop that needs tweaking...

Here till Monday

The three pics above are HDR applications at different levels.  I think this little experiment proves to me that subtle applications of HDR are best...

As for life in Ohio, I think my mom is pretty set on staying here at least Monday when the repair man should come to fix some of the appartment's plumbing, etc.  He only had one game for his Wii (No More Heros), so I bought Super Smash Bros. Brawl for him.  I guess I'll just be playing a lot of that all weekend...
