PHIL 220: Heidegger and Contemporary Thought

Wow...  12 pages of Heidegger's Time and Beging takes me almost 2 hours to read... :(

Oh, and the focus in these pictures above were intentional.

Spring Term Begins

And finally Spring term begins with that undeniable sense of happiness across campus. (Though the pictures above are from people at home.)

10' Guitar

Some guy down in Texas had a huge guitar sculpture outside in front of his house. It was made of circuit boreds.

Tripodless HDRs

I wanted to know how good Photomatrix is, how good of a program it is.  I tried to take 5 different exposure shots without a tripod (so the frame moved in each one) and combine them all for an HDR effect.  Tonemapped accordingly but I think my computer's graphics card couldn't really handle it too well.  Anyways, I say one was a success, the other was not.  Either way, idk if I enjoy the HDR look...

Faking Black & White

So at the end of Digital Photography, James Munson and John Schott showed the class how to use split toneing in a really subtle way to add warmth or other subtle emotions to desaturated images.  Another thing I've noticed is that one can really get away with amping up the clarity of these sort of images cause the vivid edges are masked by the natrually high contrast property of black and white images.  When you put them right next to each other (like above) one starts to noticed the muted colors.

Faking Sharpness and Focus

I took these pictures at 800 ISO and max aperture.  Unfortunately my shutter speed was still slow cause my lens is just pretty slow.  I almost sort of regret ever buying a slow lens, but a fast lens would have been about $1,400 more than I spent.  So I just applied a blur and layered some high pass effects.  It's not the same but at least the pictures are presentable now instead of just being blurry.

The Texas Sun

I decided to experiment with a few Camera Raw tools today.  I've been seeing a lot of blown out pics that I really like floating around Facebook and what not and decided to see if I could do it better.  These images are partially desaturated then split toned among other things.

Finally off the Road

Got home today at 4:30 am coming from Austin, Texas.  I've been pretty lazy with shooting new pics lately...  but I've also received my first couple assignments from Carleton's Publications.  I suppose they're not real assignments.  Just "suggestions" so then they don't have to pay me if they decide not to use the pictures come the end of the school year.  I'm not as bitter about it as I sound, I'm just excited to be getting some money out of it.  If I save up enough money (which I probably won't any time soon) I'm hoping to get a wide-angle lens.  Something along 11mm-16mm.  (It'll be my first fast lens!!)

Just some random pics

Far from quality pictures, but I figured I'd post them anyways.

Just a lot of Dead Trees

Rain delays Centex's opening games, so I updated by blog and am working on my Mellon Mays Fellowship application.

I rediscovered these on the car ride down to Texas and ... well, I thought they were pretty decent pictures.  Touched them up lightly and put them up on here.

The Chapel

I like these.  I'm not sure why.  It is, at the very least, a fresh perspective of the Chapel.  I think the lens flare in the upper right adds a nice warmth to the picture and adds a subtle contrast to the snow in the background.

The first picture is of a bench outside of  Laird at Carleton College.  The second two are in front of the Mill City Ruins in Minneapolis from winter break 2009.  I found them again on the car ride down to Texas and thought they were worth sharing.

Walking Around Campus

Found myself with large amounts of free time yesterday, and so I picked up my camera and just enjoyed the fabulous day.

Alas the End of another Term

And so comes the end of winter term.  This has probably been the most fun filled term I've had this far.  It's also the first term I didn't have to take a French class :)

Above are a couple unedited pictures for you.  I've been pretty sick. An awful cough... can't get any sleep because of it..  Anyways, come back tomorrow.  The pics are gonna be sweet!

Just one more Final

Finished my CS final the other day.  It doesn't make much sense.  Originally it was going to be a graphical simulation of a Sayles Dance, but then my partner's schedule and mine didn't match up very well, so we decided to do it on our own.  I had already written the code for a class Male and class Female, so I wanted to use them somehow.  I ended up with a Red-Bull-gives-you-wings graphical simulation.  Basically people walk across the screen randomly until they hit a red bull can lying on the ground.  Then the can disappears, they grow wings, and fly off the screen.  Everything just keeps repeating itself with random coordinates.  And if you click on the screen, a Red Bull can will appear where you clicked.

Then I read the assignment again and realized I needed something time-based too... so then I added randomly generated flowers that grow in size and in number as time progresses.  Doesn't make much sense, but it fulfills the requirement...

Just the Logic final now...
