You've Got Mail

So my first piece of equipment came in the mail today! This is what I got:

I bought it off e-bay for $556. So I didn't save a whole lot of money, but I guess that also means photography stuff holds its value incredibly well so long as you keep everything in good condition. After a brief inspection, from what I know about lenses (which isn't much) I think its in perfect condition and everything. Anyways, the Camera itself (Nikon D3000) is released to stores August 28th, so I'm expecting it by September 4th. I bought it off J&R usuing, so I should be getting 10% back and another 1% for using a rewards credit-card.

As for my 50mm lens, it was shipped out today and I am expecting it in about a week. So no later than the 31st of this month! All in all, I should have all my starting photographer gear sometime in the first week of September right before I get back to school on September 11th.

On a side note ... (Though I'm pretty sure Zach is the only person reading this blog thus far) ... you should become a "follower" of my blog. You can do so with a click of a button on the right hand side. Once I start posting pictures, I plan to have short commentary on the blog itself, and then a more in-depth one as a comment post on the photo. Or maybe I'll just keep it all in the comments of the photos. We'll see. I want to keep this more professional so once my photos start (which probably won't be for a few more weeks) I will minimize commentary not relevant to the photo. This means you should still keep in touch with me on facebook or something!

And one last thing. My poll-question wasn't exactly what I wanted, so I changed the options. Its just for fun, but you need to vote for it to be interesting! So re-vote! But thanks for choosing "Hai Ngo" earlier :)

  1. OMG the internet ate my comment, so I shall try again...

I have Nikon too... a D70. We have almost the same lense, except yours is a little better. Mine is 18-70mm and yours is 16-85mm. I have a telephoto lense too. Just got it 2 days ago actually. It was a Christmas present from my Dad but the mail man never quite got it to me in California haha. It's amazing how clear the photos are with how far they are away. The only annoyance I have with the telephoto lense is that it's like... electronically focused and takes a while sometimes. Maybe I just need to read the booklet on how to make it manually adjustable.

The camera rocks, so I'm sure you'll be as happy with it as I am. Only problem is I have such bad luck because there is a piece of dust or something in my camera making EVERY picture I take have a little black spot in it. I think I'm going to have to have it professionally cleaned or something because I've tried to get it out... and failed. >:[

So now Finny isn't your only reader and I expect a shout out next time :) haha

  2. Posted on your fb wall. Consider making a photoblog yet? :)

Anyways, I know I'm new to photography and all, but I orignally desided to make the investment into photography after talking to a CUT (Carleton Frisbee Team) Alumni who is a professional photographer for non-profits in Africa. Anyways, he says that you should get a 50mm lens. It's one of the cheapest lenses and allows for the most creative shots. You can google more info about it. Its just more for portraits and macro shots.

Nice to know I have more than one reader though! Did you vote in the new poll yet? If not, you should :)

Any particular reason you wanted a DSLR for Christmas? And that's a pretty nice gift...!!

  3. i see what you mean about needing email updates about replys to comments...

anyways, no i hadn't thought of a photoblog. maybe you'll inspire me to make one. would kind of be a pain in the ass right now though since the only computer in the house that has internet is the desktop in my dad's office. he isn't quite hip enough to have wireless yet so i'd have to transfer all my pictures and stuff to a usb and then uoload them. meh. i'm lazy :P

hmm maybe i'll ask for a 50mm for christmas this year ;) and i was totally shocked when my dad gave it to me. usually they just get me like movies and pajamas for christmas. well that's a lie. he bought me a stereo once, which was pretty sick for a 9 year old. haha. but yeah it is a really nice gift, which is why i was so shocked. as i previously mentioned, i'm lazy, so i'm not really getting to really use it just yet. but maybe once i get my camera cleaned i'll delve into the world of photo blogging.

  4. Now idk whether to reply to you on here or fb... I'll let you know how my 50mm works out for me. But for non-professional photographers like us, you might just want to ask for a Macro lens (for true optical macro as opposed to the camera's digital macro).

Then again, if your not that into photography, maybe you should ask for something else all together :)
